Most of us have often come across the word M16. What exactly is this? M16 officially a rifle in the military usage is meant for AR-15 rifle. This is a lightweight 5.56mm, air cooled, gas operated, and magazine fed assault rifle with a rotating bolt. This rifle is crafted of steel, aluminum, composite plastics and polymer materials. The introductory versions of M16 were used by US Marine Corps and Army. This was the first M16 that was used operationally.

This version had triangular hand guards, three pronged flash suppressor and no forward assist. The bolt carriers that were used were also chrome plated and slick sided thus lacking forward assist notches. Later the chrome plates were replaced with parkerized carriers without making any changes in the center portion of the bolt carrier. The main difficulty with M16 was inadequacy of forward assist. To overcome this XM16E1 was developed by US army. This was almost similar to M16 with slight variations like forward assist and related notches in the bolt carrier. The production of this weapon was finalized in 1967 but an problem cropped up that highlighted the three pronged flash suppressor which got caught to twigs and leaves at the time of military operations. Eventually this was replaced with a closed bird cage flash suppressor and several other changes were made. Cleaning kits along with barrels consisting of chrome plate chambers and completely lined bores were used. These above mentioned changes have reduced the malfunctions in the weapon. A rib was also built on one side of the XM16E1 receiver to prevent accidental pressing of magazine release button while trying to close the ejection port cover. This rib was extended while producing M16 along with certain improvements like the bolt cam pin and the hole it rides in the bolt were tapered to prevent the bolt for getting topsy-turvy thus failing to function. Even though the use of M16 is restricted in US, it is still one of the standard weapons in use across the globe.

The inefficiency of XM16E1 and M16 during war with Vietnam has forced the US Marine corps to look for new weapons. This has lead to the development of M16A2. This is a more extensive weapon with new rifling, thick barrel and ability to withstand fire without getting over heated. An additional adjustable rear sight was added to this weapon enabling the rear sight to be dialed for specific range settings between 300 to 800 meters or make use of its ballistic characteristic that allows windage adjustments without the need of any tool or cartridge. Slight modifications were also made in the flash suppressor, hand guard, pistol grip and butt-stock. All in all M16A2 along with its new and improved features added further weight and complexity to the M16 series of weapons. Despite original criticism, this rifle was able to comply with NATO standards and at the same time replace the traditional Vietnam era of weapons.

Why the 2nd Amendment is so important and vital to our freedom

The 2nd Amendment creates part of the Bill of Rights of the United States of America. This particular amendment protects the right to keep and bear arms which means that the people has the right to bear firearms and guns for their safety, their own state, or the United States, and of course to hunt game. It forbids any law to be passed with the aim of disarming the people unless a crime has been committed, or they pose a real danger to the public. Until this day, the 2nd Amendment still stands despite the censorship of its detractors and seems that it will be staying for good under the protection of the Bill of Rights.
When it was first drafted, the idea is to have a universal militia during the 1790’s because it is very expensive for the government to bring guns to all of the members of the militia. They say that this right originated from the English courts where the king requires his subjects to bear firearms and guns for military duty. During that time, they don’t have a regular army and police force so certain men had to keep watch and ward at night to keep the peace in the communities, hence the need to keep an assault rifle and firearms in the house of certain men. These men are tasked to ward off thieves and to capture and confront suspicious persons.

The only difference is, the 2nd Amendment does not discriminate against social classes unlike with the English where only the wealthy are able to bear firearms. It should also be emphasized that in arming the militia with guns, which is a natural defense of any free country against invasions, or any uprising that will jeopardize the peace and democracy in a country, the right against usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers within or outside the country can be impede and eventually discouraged. Some historians and philosophers say and believe that injustice in a country will be exerted unless forcibly resisted. Having the right to bear firearms gives the ammunition to make sure that injustice does not happen – figuratively and literally speaking.
With the advancement in technological warfare, the classes of guns supported by the 2nd amendment have also grown in number. It includes Ak47, Ar15 and M16 assault riffles. The registration process has also improved with all the requirements necessary for a person to obtain a gun. There are also individuals who are prohibited from carrying a gun because the court does not see them fit to carry a firearm that may cause harm to a multitude of people. Even if the 2nd Amendment was created to further the rights and liberty of the people, it can also very easily cause the violation of the rights of people facing the other end of the barrel. Despite this possibility, the 2nd Amendment has done more good than harm to the people and the state. There are enough regulations to keep it and its consequences in check. All in all, it has promoted liberty and uphold the rights of the people.
